Backflow records to keep, and for how long
The tester keeps a copy; the duty to hold the records usually sits with the owner. What the bylaws we have read say:
- The CRD: the customer must maintain a file of test results for every backflow preventer and produce it for inspection (Bylaw 3516 s.7.6), and keep the test tag displayed at the device (s.7.5).
- Calgary: a customer must retain test report records for 2 years and make them available on request (Water Utility Bylaw 40M2006 s.39(4)).
- The Regional District of Central Kootenay: records kept on the property and produced on request.
What to keep, per device, per year
- The completed test report, signed by the tester.
- The authority's acknowledgement that it received the report — not only your sent email.
- For a failed device: the repair record and the passing retest.
- The notice to test, where your authority sends one; in the CRD its date starts the clock.
